We explain what the 2026 Federal Budget means for migrants in Australia

News 15 May 2026

This week, the Australian Government has announced a new national Budget. This explains what it will spend its money on over the next few years.

If you are wanting to migrate to Australia, or remain living here long-term, here are the Budget decisions that might impact you.

Are you aged between 18-32?

Under the Australian Government’s Points System, you are the most eligible to be approved for a Skilled or Student Visa, or PR. If you are a prospective student, a graduate, or someone on a Working Holiday Visa wanting to stay in Australia long-term, speak to us.

Thinking about Australian Permanent Residency (PR?)

The Government is prioritising highly skilled and well-educated migrants in the Points Test system. So if you have qualifications or skills from your country of origin – these could benefit you.

Do you have a skill or trade in construction?

The Government is investing $85.2 million dollars to speed up Skills Assessments and licensing, making it faster and easier for you to work in Australia. This also makes it easier for businesses to hire and sponsor builders, electricians, engineers, plumbers, tilers, glaziers and other tradespeople.

Are you currently living in Australia? This is good news.

For migrants living here, who have a professional qualification you have not been able to use, things could change for the better now.

We recommend speaking to one of our affordable, expert Migration Agents today for a no-pressure talk about your new options.

Migration is forecast to be lower than previous years.

Australia is letting in less migrants, which makes conditions more strict for applying. But, do not lose hope. If you are wanting to migrate to Australia, we recommend working with a professional Migration Agent to reduce risk, avoid mistakes in your visa application, and have the best opportunity for success.

Partner Visa waits.

The Government has not announced any changes to the Partner Visa system: there can still be a long wait for Partner and Prospective Marriage Visas. This means that for many, the best time to start a Partner Visa application is now.

Migrating to Australia is not always easy or simple. But a trusted, experienced Migration Agent who understands Australian migration laws, can make all the difference.
