A new Vietnamese community was arriving, following the end of the Vietnam War. More and more families were gathering to start new lives in suburbs like Sunshine, Preston, Springvale and Footscray.
Thousands of newly-arrived migrant families needed support. They were seeking safety, security, and the hope of success for their children.
Sadly, there were not many services in Australia to help them.
But two people cared enough to make a difference.
Our organisation, later becoming Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre, was then founded.
Both of our founders deeply believed that migrants and refugees were valuable and important members of Melbourne’s community. They believed that migrants and refugees deserved expert care, quality professional help, and the compassion that comes from lived experience in order to succeed.
So, they got to work.
Since then, we’ve helped tens of thousands of people who have successfully migrated to Melbourne, from more than 50 countries across the world. Over four decades of care, we’ve grown into a respected and trusted local community institution.
