The light after darkness: Ava’s story

Stories 16 September 2025

Some stories can only be told by the person on the journey. And this week, we’re sharing a client story from Sanaz, one of our dedicated Settlement and Family Services Senior Case Managers.

“Ava’s family came under our support at Spectrum after a traumatic event that shook their world.

Her father, already unwell, was injured during a car theft while driving for Uber. The incident left the family reeling, and Ava, the youngest daughter, suddenly found herself at the centre of everything communicating with the hospital, police, insurance, and me, her Case Manager.

She carried an enormous emotional and logistical burden for someone her age.

As our relationship grew and trust was built, Ava began to share more about their financial struggles and her own aspirations. She had a strong desire to study and find meaningful work but had missed out on a free course due to earlier family challenges. That missed opportunity left her feeling stuck and disheartened.

After speaking with our employment team, we mapped out a pathway that aligned with her goals: Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support. When we couldn’t secure a loan to cover the course fees, I reached out to the community, and we found a sponsor willing to support her. That moment felt like a light had been switched on after a long time in darkness.

It lifted not only Ava, but her entire family.

This Monday, Ava called me in tears of happiness. She had just started her placement at a local hospital while continuing her studies. Once she completes her 120 hours, she’ll be able to begin working. She told me she couldn’t have done it without Spectrum’s support, describing our help as life-changing for her and her parents.

Even more moving, she shared her hope to one day sponsor someone else who finds themselves in the same position she once did.

For me, Ava’s story is a powerful reminder of why our work matters. It’s not just about helping someone find a job or access education it’s about restoring hope, rebuilding confidence, and changing the trajectory of entire families.

Ava’s journey shows how timely support, genuine care, and strong community connections can transform lives.”

But wait, there’s more: This week, Ava took time off from her hospital placement to come and visit us at Spectrum! Here’s what she had to say:

“In those days when I was working hard in a factory in Turkey producing hospital gowns, medical fabrics, and disposable medical materials, the environment was very unfair.

We were waiting for seven years to receive a refugee visa and a safe place to live. I could never have imagined that one day I would have access to the right education, be part of the health system, and even use those very products myself.

But recently, during my placement, I noticed that some of the gowns, disposable covers, and gloves I was using came from that same brand and factory. This time, I cried — but it was a happy cry!

“If I have thrived and grown, it is because of the faith I had, and the faith you placed in me, helping me to succeed in a new environment with no savings and no connections. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate you.”

She said, “Please keep doing your great work. I am happy to be an example of the big shift that can be made through hard work and the remarkable support I received.

I also want to say, I am humbly grateful and happy to share my story on any platform that could help others — so they too can reach the right people and programs, trust in their journey of settling in Australia, and begin to heal.
