Volunteer Week 2026: Recognising Spectrum’s Board

Stories 22 May 2026

Volunteering can change lives. It can provide a helping hand, share knowledge, and connect people across services and spaces.

And volunteers come in many different forms. This week, our Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre Board and Executive Leadership got together for an Annual Strategy Day – discussing a roadmap for Spectrum’s future growth.

As part of this event, each Board Member was gifted a copy of Seeking Asylum, an important collection of stories of people seeking asylum, produced by the ASRC as a token of our appreciation for their time and effort.

“This Volunteer Week, I want to acknowledge our eight Board members who generously support Spectrum. They bring preparation, passion and a deep commitment to our purpose, consistently going above and beyond—from subcommittee leadership to event participation.”

Rebecca Power, Spectrum CEO

You may be surprised to hear that that we have a Volunteer Board. Outside of Spectrum, our Board dedicate their time to a variety of other complex and demanding professional roles across fields including finance, higher education, energy, aged care, technology and more.

This means that contributing to Spectrum’s delivery of services to migrants and refugees comes at their own expense, taking time away from families and other commitments.

Spectrum’s Board has four committees, that allow our Board Members to leverage their specialised skills and experience to assist our Leadership team in making important decisions, efficiently.

In the Finance and Audit committee, Board members Chris Baring Gould, Andrew Staniford and Omar Al Kassab volunteer their many years of experience to help Spectrum thrive sustainably.

In the Information Governance Committee, Board members Elisa Koch, Lizelle Hughes and Rebecca Reed volunteer their skills to help ensure that Spectrum’s data is optimised for success.

In the Nominations and Remuneration Committee, Sherman Young, Chris Baring Gould and Lizelle Hughes volunteer to help Spectrum be led efficiently, effectively and responsibly by our Leadership team.

Finally, in the People, Quality and Safety Committee, Ross Dawson, Rebecca Reed and Sherman Young volunteer their insights using decades of people management, clinical and aged care leadership to help support our most vital resource – our people and clients.

As Spectrum navigates ongoing changes to Australia’s Aged Care, Settlement and Migration systems, the governance and insight provided by our volunteer Board members is crucial. It’s one of the reasons that we feel confident about continuing to help people feel at home – today and into the future.

“Our Board members’ contribution makes a real difference, and we are stronger because of them.”
