Finding a job is very important for new migrants and refugees, helping you feel settled and part of the community.

Our friendly team is here to help you with job search, training, and getting ready for work. We understand the challenges you face, and we offer a range of programs that can help you find the right job and build a bright future in Australia.

Working In a New Culture (WINC)

This is a group program that consists of 5 x 2-hour sessions.
It is aimed at newly arrived migrants who want to learn about working culture in Australia and who would like some useful information and tools to make their employment journey as smooth and successful as possible.
WINC will include topics about workplace culture, employee and employer expectations, applying for jobs, the hidden job market, resumes and interviews, employment rights and the law, employment pathways, and much more.

VACAP Employment Brokers Program

The Victorian African Communities Action Plan (VACAP) Employment Brokers Program provides employment readiness activities to African Australian job seekers using a strengths-based approach to work towards sustainable, fulfilling employment outcomes.

The program aims to increase job opportunities through case work and coaching, information on available opportunities, and active referral to other support services.

Who is it for?

African Australian job seekers in Melbourne’s West who are:

  • experiencing long-term unemployment
  • at risk of long-term unemployment
  • lack adequate support through other services to become job ready and gain and retain employment

Aquatic Employment Program

Run in partnership with Life Saving Victoria, this is a swimming program for newly arrived young people aged 16-25 years.

Young people can learn and develop their swimming skills and, if interested, can also receive training and support to find employment as a lifeguard or swimming teacher.

Who is it for?

Young people aged 16-25 years, who have arrived in Australia in the last five years.

Where:

Victoria University Aquatic and Fitness Centre, Footscray

When:

Tuesdays during the school term, 7-8:30 PM

Skills First Reconnect

The Skills First Reconnect Program assists participants to overcome the barriers preventing them from engaging in education and training and provides support to explore further study and/or employment pathways.

It includes brokerage assistance towards education related expenses.

Participants are supported for 18 months from the date of registration in the program.

Who is it for?

  • Young people aged 17-19 years
  • Mature participants aged 20-64 years
  • Young people impacted by the justice system, aged 17-24 years
  • People seeking asylum
  • Individuals or dependants who have the visas below with study and work rights:
    • Humanitarian, protection, or refugee visa
    • Have applied for a humanitarian, protection or refugee visa and hold a bridging visa
    • Have made an application under s.417 or s.48b of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) which is yet to be determined and hold a bridging visa

Skills First Reconnect is funded by the Australian Government Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR). It is delivered in partnership with Migrant Resource Centre Northwest Region (lead agency), with Spectrum MRC, Youth Now and Kids Off the Kerb as implementing partners.

 

Jobs, Education & Training

Run in partnership with Hume City Council, this is a weekly session for newly arrived young people aged between 15-25 years who are looking for employment, education, and training opportunities.

Employment, education, and training opportunities in Hume will be showcased at each session and attendees will be supported to apply if interested.

Who is it for?

Young people aged 15-25 years, who have arrived in Australia in the last five years.

When:

Tuesdays during the school term, 3.30-5.00 PM

Where:

Brotherhood of St Laurence, Level 2, 1100 Pascoe Vale Rd, Broadmeadows
