Another way in which we offer refugee education support, is to improve the learning experience for students from refugee backgrounds through the Family Learning program. A group of 20-25 students from refugee backgrounds meet every Monday after school hours to receive support with literacy and numeracy, while the parents can take part in information sessions on relevant topics. Students improve their learning skills and are given access to new learning opportunities. Parents/carers gain confidence and acquire important skills to support the learning experience of their child’s learning at home.
The Family Learning program is run by Spectrum in partnership with Centre for Multicultural Youth, Darebin City Council and the Preston North East Primary School.
Schools and organisations interested in the Family Learning program model can contact Spectrum Settlement Services on (03) 9496 0200.
