Getting a Home Care Package

Step One – Am I eligible?

Check that you are eligible for an Aged Care assessment. You can do this online at the Australian Government’s My Aged Care website.

You may be eligible if some of the following apply to you.

  • Having trouble doing certain activities or remembering as much information
  • Have recently been diagnosed with a medical condition or an injury that makes you less able to get around freely
  • Have recently experienced a fall or a stay in hospital
  • There has been a change in your family’s care arrangements or the support that they usually provide you

Step Two – Having my needs assessed

If you are eligible for an Aged Care assessment, an Assessor from My Aged Care will meet with you in person to assess your needs and suitability for a Home Care Package.

Step Three – What can I do while I wait?

Once your Aged Care assessment has taken place and you have been approved for a Home Care Package, there is a waiting period to find out what package level you have been assigned by My Aged Care.

The waiting period depends on how urgent My Aged Care has decided your support needs to be.

In non-urgent cases, you may wait for around 12-18 months to be assigned a Home Care Package. In urgent cases, your waiting time can be around 1-3 months.

Package levels describe how much support you need.

  • Level 1 is for people with basic care needs
  • Level 2 is for people with low care needs
  • Level 3 is for people with intermediate care needs
  • Level 4 is for people with high care needs

Step Four – Exploring my options

While you are waiting to be assigned your Home Care Package, now is an especially good time for you to explore different service providers and find out who is the best fit for your needs.

The best place to start is My Aged Care, where you can compare different Aged Care service providers.

Our caring Aged Care team at Spectrum are also here to help you. We can offer professional advice to help you think what types of supports you might like through your Home Care Package, and tell you all about the different services that are available to you.
