Families

Family and Relationship Services

Our Family and Relationship Service helps families:

  • Build strong relationships.
  • Support children and young people’s wellbeing.
  • Feel connected to the community.

Support for migrant families

Some families face challenges that make home life unsafe or stressful. Without support, this can affect children’s safety and wellbeing.

We help migrant families create safe, happy homes where everyone can reach their full potential.

Common family challenges

We support families dealing with:

  • Family conflict
  • Domestic violence
  • Parent-teenager challenges
  • Cultural differences between generations
  • Communication problems
  • Child behaviour concerns
  • Adjusting to change in a new country

How we help

Our friendly case workers understand your culture and speak your language. We offer one-on-one support including:

  • Practical strategies to improve communication and reduce conflict.
  • Advice on parenting, family relationships, and cultural differences.
  • Connections to community groups and support services.
  • Help with social support and referrals.

We can also offer group work, via the Parenting in a New Culture (PINC) program and other group sessions such as art therapy and The Shark Cage, a program that is for preventing and understanding violence against girls and women.

Who can get help?

This service is for migrant families:

  • With children up to 18 years old
  • Living in Melbourne’s north (including the local government areas of Banyule, Moreland, Darebin and Hume, and the suburbs of Bundoora, Epping, Mill Park, South Morang, Thomastown and West Melbourne).

We can work with newly-arrived families as well as those who have been in Australia for many years.

“I would like to extend special gratitude to our Spectrum Case Manager, who went above and beyond in supervising our case and keeping in constant touch with us. Her kindness, humility, and unwavering willingness to assist have left a lasting impression on me and my family. Her dedication to her work and genuine concern for others truly shine through, and we are deeply thankful for her efforts.”
