parenting in a new culture

supporting parents as they adapt to a new culture.

The Parenting in a New Culture (PINC) program provides tailored, evidence-based, comprehensive, and culturally responsive parenting education and support to parents from culturally  and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds and engages them in addressing the challenges and the opportunities of navigating parenting and family life in a new cultural context.

PINC explores the  differences in parenting norms between participants’ new country and their country of origin and aims to enhance parental skills, confidence, family functioning and child wellbeing. It explores the settlement journey, intergenerational conflict that often accompanies the migrant experience and the specific gendered experiences of parents across cultures.

PINC is delivered alongside a trained bi-cultural worker from the community who co facilitates and interprets information in a way that the parents understand.

Participants will learn, discuss and share experiences about:

  • acculturation and the settlement journey
  • brain development
  • education and the legal system
  • dealing with teenagers
  • managing stress
