Celebrating Our Spectrum Family (and how you can join us!)

This week, we’ve made time for play amidst our work! Spectrum hosted our annual Family Day celebration, bringing together more than a hundred of our amazing support workers and staff from across Melbourne, together with their loved ones, at Barry Road Community Activity Centre.

With raffles, games and prizes for young and old, our Family Day was a celebration of our people and an opportunity to reconnect with each other – and have fun.

At our face painting stall, children and young people were transformed into a wild and wonderful array of magical creatures from butterflies and unicorns, to stars and cartoon characters. Over at Nazia’s henna tattoo booth, tradition and modernity came together creating beautiful skin designs. Even our resident Spider-Man opted for some henna web tattoos to enhance his look! A fantastic drum performance by Kwame, accompanied by our intrepid budding musicians, was followed by an abundant feast of delicious treats from many different cultures.

With smiles on faces, hugs and full bellies, we finished our afternoon planning to get together more often.

At Spectrum, we recognise the importance of family and community in making sure that all of our staff ‘feel at home’. We know that not only are our staff dedicated, skilled and compassionate professionals, they’re also Mums and Dads, friends and community leaders; with diverse backgrounds, unique experiences and individual interests.

What they all have in common is a desire to make a positive difference to refugee and migrant communities across Melbourne; to do work that truly helps people.

Recently, at our quarterly All Staff meeting, we enjoyed hearing from Spectrum staff across a range of roles, about why they joined, and more importantly, why they’ve stayed as part of our team – some for twenty years!

Here’s some of their top responses. Do any of these resonate with you, or someone you know who is looking to take the next step in their career?

    • Spectrum offers flexibility, meaning that staff can also prioritise the other things that they love – their families, friends, communities and wellbeing.
    •  The Spectrum team is diverse, inclusive and supportive of each person’s cultural values and lived experiences – in fact, we’re better for them!
    • At Spectrum, the work that we do improves people’s lives. Whether it’s assisting a family to settle into life in Australia, helping a young person find work, or ensuring that a group of elders live their best years through friendships, new skills and cultural celebrations – our staff know that their work is meaningful and important.

We aren’t just celebrating our fabulous team this week – we’re also inviting you to join us! As we continue to grow, Spectrum is recruiting for a range of exciting and meaningful roles, including casual support work, full-time program and case management, and more.

Over the coming weeks, we invite you to take a look at these opportunities, or share them with someone you know.
